POSSIBLE SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS & PREVENTING ADDITIONAL HEARING LOSS
You may not notice it at first, as hearing loss is sudden, but at as it happens more frequently, you should recognize the following symptoms you might be experiencing hearing loss:

Frequently asking others to repeat themselves.
Turning up the volume on the TV and radio to levels that are uncomfortable for others.
You don’t always hear the doorbell or telephone ring.
You can hear people speak, but struggle to understand the words they are saying.
It feels like others are always mumbling.
Understanding conversation in groups or with background noise is difficult.
You hear a buzzing or ringing noise in your ears.
If you are in fact exhibiting these symptoms, we at Southwestern Hearing Center suggest you do the following to protect your ears and hearing, hopefully preventing additional hearing loss:

Turn volume down
Walk away
Protect your ears
More specifically, you can:

Limit your amount of time that you are exposed to noise
Wear hearing protection (foam earplugs, ear muffs, custom hearing protection)
Turn down the volume of your radio, MP3 player, television, etc.
Avoid medications that may be harmful to your hearing
Get your hearing checked regularly – Stay on top of your hearing health. If you notice that you aren’t hearing as well as you were, give us a call or visit any one of our Southwestern Hearing Centers locations for a free screening.
Control ear wax – If impacted ear wax is left untreated, it may lead to more permanent hearing loss.
Reduce stress – Make sure to keep stress levels low by practicing stress relief techniques such as meditation and relaxation.
Watch your diet – choose healthy choices over fast food or processed junk.
Nix the nicotine – Compared to non-smokers, nicotine users have a 15% increase in hearing loss
Minimize pain reliever use – overuse of pain relievers poison your ears over time
If problems still persist, please feel free to contact us at Southwestern Hearing Center, where our hearing aid experts can help you and your particular situation!

LOSS IN HEARING CAN AFFECT YOUR LIFE. WE’RE HERE TO HELP.
When people suffer from hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss), periods of hearing ringing in the ears, or tinnitus without seeking help from experienced or hearing care professionals, they can suffer from anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation and inadequacy. In certain instances, adults with hearing loss may be at a higher risk of dementia.

Additionally, depending on the degree of hearing loss, poor hearing may cause strain on relationships because of misunderstandings over what is or isn’t being said.

Speaking with an audiology specialist about these issues, obtaining comprehensive hearing tests, and finding the proper hearing aids can help to mitigate these issues in your hearing journey. People with hearing aids often find that conversations cause less anxiety and there is less embarrassment about asking for a speaker to slow down or talk louder.

Treatable hearing loss does not have to mean the end of life as you know it. Contact us or visit a clinic and let a hearing healthcare professional give you back a natural listening experience today.

CHOICES OF HEARING DEVICES
Hearing aids come from a number of different hearing aid brands in a wide variety of styles, including invisible-in-canal, in-the-ear, receiver-in-canal, completely-in-canal, in-the-canal, behind the ear and custom-fit hearing aids, all of them being advanced digital hearing aids, providing natural sound quality. Some require batteries that are replaced periodically and some come in the form on rechargeable hearing aids.

They can also come in different strengths depending on the severity of hearing loss.

The variety of hearing aids means that the price points vary as well which makes these devices easier to afford, no matter your budget.

*Disclaimer: People should take note: individual experiences with hearing aids vary dependent on severity of hearing loss, accuracy of evaluation, proper fit and ability to adapt to amplification. Also, hearing devices do not restore natural hearing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HEARING AND HEARING AIDS

CAN A HEARING AID HELP WITH TINNITUS?
Yes! There are a couple different ways an excellent hearing aid help with tinnitus. The noises produced by hearing aids can help cover up, or mute the sound of tinnitus. Not getting ringing in the ears can help the brain concentrate on outside sounds. Hearing aids can have a good masking effect on patients with the same tinnitus frequency.

Hearing aids also help increase the sound of background noise. Increasing the amount of noise that you are subjected to does the same thing. Stimulating the brain’s auditory pathways can reveal benefits, even if soft sounds are not being heard.

HOW MUCH DOES AN AUDIOLOGY EXAM IN ST. LOUIS COST?
We offer free comprehensive hearing exams and evaluation at all of our SWHC locations and free 30-day risk free trial to find which custom hearing products are right for you.

HOW MUCH DO HEARING AIDS IN ST. LOUIS COST?
The easiest answer is the shortest answer. A custom hearing aid in St. Louis cost anywhere from $500 – $6,000. The reason you are given a range and not a static price like you would find for a pair of hearing aids you can buy online or over the counter is because not all hearing losses are the same. A hearing instrument specialist at one of our hearing aid centers can do a custom evaluation and determine what model hearing aid would work best for your treatable hearing loss.
